These photos were taken on a recent expedition to a wildfowl center near Bishop Auckland in County Durham (my wife is the birdwatcher). I really liked the twisted shapes of the alder trees.

To choose the clothes
The trousers, the shirt
The colour of my hair
The length, the cut

I have to get the curl just right

And then my eyes
That shade of piercing blue
Oh, and don’t forget the shoes

With some discomfort
I slip into

Forty
And thoughts of my death
(Immanent) pervade
A cancer at every turn

What will I leave for posterity?
These poems
My name in concrete on a wall
My children
The DNA that I have sent
Spinning
Off into the future
Perhaps memories to make
Someone smile
Like the memories of my dead
Do for me
